Confidentiality, Guidance, and Trust Are Key Elements of an Effective Survey: Amitava Saha, DDG, NSO, Kolkata

– NSO Conducts One-Day Zonal Training on National Household Income Survey (NHIS) at Nagpur

Mumbai :- The National Statistical Office (NSO), Zonal Office, Nagpur, organized a one-day training programme on the National Household Income Survey (NHIS) on Friday, with the objective of ensuring the effective and smooth implementation of the upcoming survey. The programme was organized at the Civil Lines–based premises of the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), Nagpur.

While addressing the participants, the Chief Guest, Amitava Saha, Deputy Director General, NSO (HSD), Kolkata, explained that non-sampling errors pose a major challenge in surveys conducted on sensitive topics such as income. In this context, he emphasized that it is essential for field officials to assure respondents of confidentiality, provide proper guidance, and build trust. He also described pre-survey training as an effective means to address these challenges.

Sunita Bhaskar, Additional Director General, NSO, FOD (HQ), Delhi, joined the programme virtually and addressed the gathering. In her address, she stated that the results of the National Household Income Survey are eagerly awaited by the Government and policymakers, making the survey extremely important. She urged participants to effectively utilize the knowledge gained during the training, including practical exercises and group activities, during field operations. She also emphasized the importance of public awareness, publicity, and coordination with the local administration.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Srinivas Uppala, Deputy Director General, National Statistical Office (CQCD), West Zone, Nagpur. In his address, he warmly welcomed all the dignitaries, speakers, and participants, and highlighted the need for training while emphasizing the crucial role of field officials. He stated that the National Household Income Survey is a highly important and sensitive survey for understanding the country’s economic landscape, and its success depends on the understanding, efficiency, and commitment of field officials.

The training programme included interactive sessions, practical examples, and group activities, which helped participants gain a better understanding of the survey concepts.

The vote of thanks was presented by L. M. Jadeja, Director, NSO (CQCD), West Zone, Nagpur. He expressed gratitude to all the speakers, participants, and officials associated with the event and expressed confidence that the training would play a significant role in the successful conduct of the National Household Income Survey.

The programme was also graced by the presence of Ranga Srinivasulu, Director, Regional Office, Nagpur. The training programme was effectively anchored by Shri Priyank Gaud, Junior Statistical Officer. On this occasion, officers and staff of the Zonal Office as well as regional offices under the West Zone were also present.
