– Unique Solar Shade Design Competition to Beat the Heat
– NMC Invites Designs from Engineering Students, Professionals, Designers, and Consultants
Nagpur :- In a unique initiative to protect commuters from the scorching heat at traffic signals, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has launched the “Innovate for Nagpur City!” competition. The contest aims to invite functional designs for ‘Solar Rooftop Shades’ to be installed at major busy intersections across the city from the citizens.
The NMC is inviting entries from engineering students, working professionals, designers, and consultants. The top three designs will be awarded cash prizes.
Concept and Leadership
The vision for the ‘Solar Rooftop Shade’ project was proposed during a high-level meeting by Honorable Mayor Nita Thackeray and Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani Vakhare. Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibedh, Ruling Party Leader Narendra (Balya) Borkar, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin, and Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant were present. The project is being implemented by the NMC Traffic Department.
Key Benefits of the Project
The installation of solar rooftops at busy signals aims to achieve multiple goals:
Commuter Comfort: Providing immediate relief to motorists waiting at red lights during peak summer.
Green Energy: Generating electricity through solar panels to promote environmental sustainability.
Revenue & Aesthetics: Creating space for advertisers on signboards while enhancing the city’s visual appeal.
Competition Details & Prizes
The NMC aims to involve citizens in the city’s development by seeking innovative grassroots ideas. The prize categories are as follows:
First Prize: ₹25,000
Second Prize: ₹21,000
Third Prize: ₹17,000
Special Highlight: “Coffee with Mayor”
In addition to the cash awards, the winners will have the exclusive opportunity to discuss their concepts with the first citizen of Nagpur, Hon. Mayor Nita Thackeray, during a special “Coffee with Mayor” session.

Application Period: April 6 to April 20, 2026.
Presentation Date: Shortlisted designs will be presented on April 24, 2026, at the NMC Headquarters.
