100 Million!!!!! – Nagpur Metro Ridership Touches Magical Figure

Nagpur 18 :  10,00,00,000 (Ten Crore). Some might mistake it for a fat pay–package of a Multi-National Company (MNC). Some might even consider it to be population of a mid-size Indian state. But No. this is Maha Metro Nagpur cumulative ridership till now, since its operations commenced.

To say that this is a landmark achievement could be an understatement. Because this figure underlines the efforts put in by the Maha Metro Nagpur officials and employees over the years. Nagpur metro started commercial operations in March 2019 with limited services in the morning and evening hours.

However, gradually with people reposing faith in this transport system and it becoming lifeline for Nagpurians, the ridership increased with every passing year. In fact, this figure is not just an achievement for Nagpur Metro, in itself, but for sustainable urban transportation, signalling strong and growing public trust in the city’s modern mass transit system.

As the Phase-1 Network opened in stages, the year-wise ridership was 55,000 (2018-19), 9 lakhs (2019-20), 19 lakhs (2020-21), 67 lakhs (2021-22), 2.43 Crores (2022-23), 2.55 Crores (2023-24), 3.16 crores (2024-25) & 92 lakh (2025-26 – till 15th July).

This milestone highlights not only the increasing reliance on public transportation in Nagpur but also underscores the Metro’s vital role in creating a more connected, accessible, and environmentally responsible urban future. Notably, the Metro system is designed to be easily accessible for specially-abled passengers, with features such as ramps, elevators, tactile guidance paths, and dedicated seating, ensuring inclusive travel for all.

A key driver of this growth has been the rising participation of students, who now make up approximately 20% of the total ridership. This encouraging trend is fuelled by Nagpur Metro’s student-focused initiatives, including a 30% discount on Maha Card fares for students up to the graduation level and a ₹100 Daily Unlimited Travel Pass.

These measures have made commuting affordable and convenient for the city’s youth, fostering a strong culture of public transport use from an early age. Reflecting the public’s confidence in the system, an all-time high daily ridership of 2.2 lakh passengers was recorded on 1st January 2023. The Phase–I of Nagpur Metro opened in stages and the complete project was dedicated to the citizens on 11th December 2022.

Beyond improving mobility and affordability, Nagpur Metro continues to champion environmental sustainability. By encouraging commuters to choose public transport over private vehicles and adopting energy-efficient technologies, the Metro has made significant strides in reducing Nagpur’s carbon footprint. To date, it has contributed to a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions, supporting the city’s commitment to cleaner, greener transportation.

This achievement aligns seamlessly with the broader vision of transforming Nagpur into a smart, sustainable, and student-friendly city. As the Metro network continues to expand and innovate, it remains dedicated to delivering safe, reliable, and eco-conscious mobility solutions for all segments of society.

Nagpur Metro’s progress stands as a shining example for other urban centres seeking to modernize their transport infrastructure while promoting environmental and social inclusivity. This milestone of 10 crore ridership is a true testament to the strong and growing public trust in our city’s modern mass transit system.
