Nagpur :- Just two weeks after the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched a citywide survey for it’s first-ever Healthy Streets Policy, more than 1,300 citizens have already shared their views on the future of Nagpur’s streets. Officials reported that over 800 responses were received through the online survey, while 500 came through offline channels.
The survey is conducted under the guidance of NMC Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijeet chaudhari and CEO of Nagpur smart city and Additional commissioner Vasumana Pant.
The survey—open until September 25 —invites residents to share how they move around Nagpur, the challenges they face, and the improvements they want to see. NMC is developing the policy with technical support from ITDP India to ensure it reflects the real needs of citizens.
Why the policy matters:
Nagpur has witnessed a sharp rise in private motor vehicle ownership over the past decade, resulting in traffic congestion, unsafe conditions, and growing risks for pedestrians, cyclists, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. A recent study, Nagpur Urban Street Impact Assessment, by ITDP India found recurring vehicle speeds exceeding 50 kmph on arterial streets. Both the data and initial citizen feedback highlight the urgent need for safer walking and cycling spaces, improved junction design, and better street safety measures.
About the Healthy Streets Program To address these challenges, NMC, with ITDP India’s technical inputs, has launched the Nagpur Healthy Streets Program, a long-term initiative to make streets safer, more inclusive, and accessible for all.
As part of this program, the Healthy Streets Policy is being created and will:
• Provide recommendations for street design
• Focus on improvements such as safer and inclusive footpaths, traffic calming measures, safer and compact junctions, and comfortable cycling infrastructure.
• Serve as a unified framework for coordination among various road-owning and development agencies in Nagpur.
The Healthy Streets Policy marks a pivotal step toward building safer, more inclusive streets for all. NMC urges all Nagpurkars to continue participating in the survey and help shape the future of the city’s streets.
