– Water Supply to Parts of Nagpur to be Affected on 8 June
Nagpur :- A major disruption in Nagpur’s water supply system has occurred after a borewell drilling machine damaged the 1200 mm diameter raw water rising main of the Kanhan Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at Juni Kamptee village.
The Kanhan WTP is one of the city’s key water sources, drawing water from the Kanhan River for treatment and distribution. Nearly 65% of the river water is lifted from the intake well-cum-jackwell located on the left bank of the river and conveyed through the raw water rising main to the treatment plant situated on the right bank. The damaged pipeline is a critical component of this water transfer system.
Due to the damage, a significant quantity of raw water is being lost before reaching the treatment plant, adversely affecting the plant’s treatment capacity. Consequently, water supply in the northern, eastern and parts of the southern areas of Nagpur city is likely to be affected.
To undertake urgent repair and restoration work, an emergency shutdown has been scheduled on Monday, 7 June 2026, from 10.30 PM for approximately 3 hours. Morning supply through all kanhan based ESR’s will be partially affected. During this period, consumers receiving water through 42 Elevated Service Reservoirs (ESRs) across the following zones may experience reduced water supply and low water pressure:
1)Ashi Nagar Zone
2)Satranjipura Zone
3)Lakadganj Zone
4)Nehru Nagar Zone
The incident has once again highlighted the growing risk posed by unregulated drilling and excavation activities. Repeated damage to critical public infrastructure not only disrupts essential services but also results in substantial losses to the civic administration and inconvenience to citizens.
In view of such recurring incidents, there is an urgent need for regulatory measures, including:
Introduction of penal provisions against individuals, contractors or agencies responsible for damaging public infrastructure during drilling or excavation activities.
Mandatory prior approval from Nagpur Municipal Corporation before undertaking any borewell drilling, excavation or related works within city limits and adjoining areas where civic utility infrastructure exists.
Citizens in the affected areas are requested to store sufficient water in advance and use it judiciously during the shutdown period. OCW and NMC regret the inconvenience caused and seek the cooperation of consumers until normal water supply is restored.
