Nagpur, 30 : In a significant move to enhance urban mobility and public well-being, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in technical collaboration with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), is developing the city’s first ‘Healthy Streets Policy’. This initiative aims to make Nagpur’s streets safer, greener, and more inclusive for all citizens.
The ‘Healthy Streets Policy’ is being formulated under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari. It focuses on creating safer infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, including improved footpaths, dedicated cycling facilities, and safer intersections. The policy will prioritize walking, cycling, and public transport over private vehicles.
NMC is urging all Nagpur residents to participate in a survey to share their experiences and suggestions regarding the city’s streets. The feedback received will be crucial in shaping the new policy.
Addressing Urban Mobility Challenges
A study by ITDP reveals that vehicles on major roads in Nagpur often exceed speeds of 50 km/h, posing a significant safety risk. The new policy is a critical step towards building a safer, more inclusive, and efficient street network for all users, particularly children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
The survey is designed to gather public input on the challenges faced while commuting and the desired changes in road planning. The NMC has called on citizens to participate in large numbers, emphasizing that the survey takes only a few minutes to complete.
